About the Scheme

The Packaging Forum’s Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme is a voluntary product stewardship scheme which has been accredited under the Waste Minimisation Act (2008). Soft plastic packaging consists of film made largely from HDPE (high density polyethelene), LDPE (low density polyethylene), and includes laminated plastics. Post-consumer flexible plastic includes bread bags, frozen food bags, toilet paper packaging, confectionery and biscuit wrap, chip bags, pasta and rice bags, courier envelopes, sanitary hygiene packaging, coffee and tea plastic packaging and squeeze pouches. The scheme is 100% funded by industry and fees cover the costs of collection, management, and processing of the products.

Fee Structure

The scheme has the following levels of membership: Category - Annual Fee excl. gst Small - $3,025 Small to medium - $6,325 Medium - $8,250 Large - $13,200 Categories are based on company size and amount of soft plastic used. The scheme manager will provide guidance.

Membership Fees

Your fees contribute to:

  • An end-to-end recycling service which includes the collection of post-consumer soft plastic from stores, baling, quality control, delivery to end market and the cost of processing into new plastic products.
  • Membership services including packaging design for scheme compliance and consumer engagement. Membership growth and retention.
  • Only scheme members can use the Recycle at Store label on packaging and will be able to access the NZ portal of the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) system.
  • Opportunity to purchase a soft plastic recycling bin and weekly collection service for your site (region specific).

Scheme communications and marketing including:

  • Promotion as a scheme member on our recycling. kiwi website and link to facebook page.
  • Bi-monthly newsletters which showcase members’ activities to reduce plastic consumption and plastic waste.
  • Quarterly webinars on topics relevant to members.
  • Advocacy for members about regulations relating to plastic packaging; Submissions on government policy relating to soft plastic materials (for example priority products, Basel Convention Amendment, hard to recycle plastics).
  • Scheme management, operational management and administration.
