Plastics have rapidly become part of our everyday lives. They influence many aspects of our day, from how we travel, to how our food and drink is preserved. However, despite the many benefits plastics offer, the proliferation of plastic is not without issue. A number of environmental impacts associated with the production, use and disposal are now widely known.

On 31 July 2018, The Packaging Forum’s members pledged to make all their packaging recyclable or compostable by 2025.

To make this possible, industry players including packaging manufacturers, brand owners, retailers and recyclers are working together, under The Packaging Forum’s leadership, to develop a sustainable solution for rigid plastics in food and beverage packaging.

What we aim to do

  • To include recycled content in food and beverage packaging
  • To promote collection options that will improve the quality of material available for processing
  • To invest in on-shore processing capability for New Zealand post-consumer plastics
  • To remove ambiguity about packaging environmental claims and ensure packaging types are standardised
  • To consider alternative packaging types that are proven to have positive environmental impacts
  • To transition rigid plastics for food and beverage packaging to a Circular Economy model
